The Age of Printing on Demand

Print on Demand is changing the industry of book publishing by making it easier and less expensive to publish your book if you are a new author.
Just like its name suggests, you only have to print the number of copies needed to fill customer orders. In the past, your only option would have been to do a full print run, amounting in several hundred books at a time, forcing you to find space for large inventory of your unsold books.
Even though it costs more to use a print on demand printer instead of having a couple hundred books printed at one time, you have to consider the savings over time of paying for books you haven't sold yet.
In the past, this manner of publishing was called "Vanity Publishing" because the implied thought was your book wasn't good enough to be published by a traditional publisher, forcing you to find an inferior means of getting your book to the public.
The only other alternative to Vanity Publishing was trying to get your book published by a large publishing house, where you could usually expect several rejection letters, even if you did have an excellent manuscript, before it was picked up, after that you would have to wait a year or better before your book was published.

The process of print on demand publishing is pretty simple, the author sends their manuscript to the printer, who keeps it on file. Whenever there is a sale, the printer will run off the number of copies needed to fill the order and, in most cases, ship the book to the customer charging you the predetermined cost.
Books make it from manuscript to sale in a fraction of the time they did in the past. This quick turnaround time can also be a huge benefit when you are dealing with time sensitive material.
Print on Demand has changed the landscape for new authors in recent years, making it possible for great books to reach the masses that may not have made it in the past. There are more great books than ever being published by people that might otherwise have gone unnoticed.
There are several stories about self-published authors producing books that go on to be immensely popular and some are even picked up by a major publisher after they have proven themselves out on their own, then going on to be even more successful in the mainstream media market.
