Conquer Writer's Block

Conquer Writer's Block, Ever have one of these days?
You have a few hours of free time (and oh, have you had to fight for it!). Maybe you've cancelled an appointment or two, put off taking care of that complicated internet-thing, and/or made it abundantly clear to the people in your life you are not to be disturbed until further notice.
At last, you've carved out time in your insane schedule to sit down at your desk
engage in your truest passion: writing.
As you open up the word document you've kept minimized for way too long and you finally still your mind long enough to think, you realize you have absolutely no idea what to say.
Your well is completely empty, the page starkly blank. This moment was supposed to be your sanctuary from the chaos of the rest of your life, but somehow it feels even more overwhelming. Writing IS your passion, right?

Suddenly, self-doubt creeps in and you wonder if perhaps it is your destiny to continue working that corporate job. Maybe you aren't so special after all - maybe your voice doesn't matter. Maybe you don't even have one.
Alright, let's stop right there: don't let this be you.
It's time to arm yourself with an arsenal of go-to actions you can take to instantly release your inner genius and terminate those nasty little creative-blockers on contact.
Here are my top three tips for unblocking creatively. These are great catalysts for writers, but can also be applied to artists across all mediums who are feeling a little stuck in the creative process.
1.) Journaling: If you're trying to write a novel and end up staring at a blank page, try first writing a few pages stream of consciousness about your own personal experience in this moment. Not only is this a great way to clear the decks emotionally, it can also act as potential inspiration for the fictional story you're creating.
2.) Witness the passion of others: This is a fun one! You could go see live music, visit an art museum, listen to your favorite album cover to cover or just go online and study some of the work of your favorite artists. Find something that moves you; this act in itself might move you past blocks into the creation of your own work!
3.) Create something outside of your usual medium: Let your inner artist out to play! If you're a writer try painting; a painter, try piano. This should be fun, cathartic and healing. It should feel like play.
